Cortical demyelinating lesions in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders? A case study with 8-year follow-up
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a rare case with initially presenting as the cortical lesions including hemianopsia, seizure, mental and behavioral abnormalities, and then gradually developed the symptoms and signs with typical optic neuritis and acute longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis. Although cortical lesions have been regarded as “red flags”, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) was diagnosed preliminarily according to the clinical, laboratory and neuroimaging manifestations. The case has been followed up for 8 years so far (from 2008 to 2016). More importantly, this case study highlights the need for further research about the cortical demyelination in patients with NMOSD.

Tumefactive Brain Lesions in Patients with Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder
Background: Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune neurological disorder that is characterized by optic neuritis and longitudinally-extended transverse myelitis lesions in spinal segments. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) findings are part of the diagnostic process in NMOSD patients, and abnormal lesion patterns may cause deviation from a correct diagnosis. Clinical P...
متن کاملO 14: Differentiating Demyelinating Disorders of the Central Nervous System – a Focus on Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis-Optica Spectrum Disorders
Significant advances have been made in diagnosis and therapy of demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system. The most common entities of this disorders in adults – multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica were initially thought to be different phenotypes of more or less the same disease. During the last ten years, this view was subsequently changed and the term neuromyelitis ...
متن کاملNeuromyelitis optica with linear enhancement of corpus callosum in brain magnetic resonance imaging with contrast: a case report
INTRODUCTION Neuromyelitis optica is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system with various patterns of brain lesions. Corpus callosum may be involved in both multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica. Previous case reports have demonstrated that callosal lesions in neuromyelitis optica are usually large and edematous and have a heterogeneous intensity showing a "marbled pattern" ...
متن کاملNeuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: a pediatric case report
Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system that predominantly affects the optic nerves and the spinal cord. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has an increasingly important role in differentiating NMOSD from other inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system, particularly multiple sclerosis (MS). Specific antibodies...
متن کاملTreatment of neuromyelitis optica with mycophenolate mofetil: retrospective analysis of 24 patients.
BACKGROUND Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is the first inflammatory autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system for which a specific antigenic target has been identified; the marker autoantibody NMO-IgG specifically recognizes the astrocytic water channel aquaporin 4. Current evidence strongly suggests that NMO-IgG may be pathogenic. Since disability accrues incrementally related...
